Chennai, 8th Nov 2014: Radiologists around the world are celebrating the role they play in keeping their patients brain active to live quality life. The third annual International Day of Radiology (IDoR, 8th Nov 2014), will focus on brain imaging, which plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of brain disease and injuries. IDoR also recognizes the important role radiation therapy plays in treating some diseases of the brain, such as cancer.

This day also marks the 119th anniversary of the 1895 discovery of the X-ray by German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen.

Physicians worldwide use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans to diagnose and treat common diseases of the brain such as alzheimer’s, dementia and parkinson’s. These scans also assist physicians in diagnosing and treating infections, trauma, stroke, seizures and tumors.

Radiology and imaging plays an integral part in a patient’s healthcare ecosystem. Millions of people worldwide are alive, and many more are enjoying a greater quality of life today, due to advances in medical imaging and radiation therapy. Radiology and Radiologists make a world of difference every day.

CURA Healthcare is proud to take part in this special day (8th Nov 2014), which will focus on the important role medical imaging plays in the diagnosis and treatment of brain disease and brain injuries.

“Medical imaging has revolutionized medicine. Physicians rely on scans to diagnose and treat a variety of conditions — especially brain disease and injuries. Countless brain scans are performed each year to help doctors make treatment decisions safely, quickly and efficiently. Imaging also helps physicians and researchers understand the intricacies of the human brain and neurological system,” said Bala.M, CEO, CURA Healthcare. He also added, “We want to educate people about the role the radiologist plays in their healthcare, particularly their brain health. Many people don’t realize they have something going on until it is affecting other parts of their body as well”.

Despite the strong growth of the Indian medical technology market in the last few years, the industry is plagued by low penetration. Healthcare access is limited to Metro and few cities. Penetration in smaller cities/towns/rural areas remains low, due to challenges such as accessibility, availability, awareness and affordability. CURA has been pioneering in indigenous imaging solutions including high end pre-owned CT, MRI and also manufactures customised/patented Digital Radiography, mobile Computed Radiography, and other x-ray related solutions for diagnosing other disorder/disease in these smaller markets in India apart from catering to healthcare providers in metro/large cities.

CURA joins hands with World Heart Federation to create Healthy Heart for everyone

CURA Healthcare Pvt. Ltd., a leading Indian medical technology company in the Diagnostic imaging space, celebrated World Heart Day 2014 with a difference. As a part of its World Heart Day campaign, CURA joined hands with WORLD HEART FEDERATION in their special WHF Ground Miles, a world-wide campaign to create awareness and encourage physical activity.

CURA also conducted awareness program for employees in MEPZ campus in Tambaram Sanatorium on Heart Health and preventive steps. It was a two prong activity including an awareness program on various cardiovascular diseases and its management followed by BP and ECG check. Over 5000 people were benefited from the awareness camp and checked for their heart health.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the major causes of death and morbidity in the India. The misery and disability that can result from cardiovascular disease to a person alive is even more devastating. The awareness programme covered the risk factors which cause cardiovascular diseases and the ways that can prevent or reduce the incidence of these diseases. The programme highlighted that most CVDs can be prevented by addressing risk factors, such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

Speaking on the occasion, Kalyanaraman, General Manager said, “India, especially southern part is fast becoming the hub for cardiovascular diseases, more so with young population. The reasons could be work related stress and life style but modifications in eating habits and addition of exercise to the routine will definitely bring down the incidences of cardiovascular disorders among young. For elderly population a low salt diet and regular exercises can be planned. We strongly recommend regular heart check-up for every individual once in a year. This would majorly help in preventing diseases, early diagnosis and creating heart health environment.”

Mr. Vijayraj, President, MEPZMA, added, “The awareness campaign focussed on the need to do regular health check-ups and be fit. We hope that people treat this as a concern and make the environment healthy place to live.”

By ensuring that people are able to make heart-healthy choices wherever they live, work and play, World Heart Day 2014 encourages us all to reduce our cardiovascular risk, and promotes a heart-healthy planet for those around us. Since the environments in which people live, work and play can have a huge effect on the ability to make the right choices for heart-health, few measures to bring heart healthy environments in home, office and community can help build a healthy nation. Some of the simple steps one can follow to have a healthy heart are:

  • Stock home with healthy food options, limit pre-packed food that is often high on sugar, salt and fat. Incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables in meals or swap sweet treats with fruits. Prepare healthy food for school/work lunches.
  • In community, create and maintain safe neighbourhoods for physical activity, such as good street lighting, playgrounds etc.
  • Demand a smoking free environment near one’s office and home.
  • Take the stairs or walk in lunch breaks.

Too often, society “blames” the individual’s lifestyle choices for his or her CVD. But the environments in which the person live, work and play can have a huge effect on his/her ability to make the right choices for our heart-health. World Heart Day 2014 is dedicated to exposing how much our environments can impact and increase CVD risk factors. CURA is determined to work with World Heart Federation to ensure heart healthy environments starting from its headquarters in MEPZ near Chennai.
